Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Group

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of personalities, and a exciting storyline including celestial beings, fiends, and malevolent powers growing in power within the city.

Note: Spoilers for the latest installment of the new season are included.

The Warrior Group Introduced

The third episode concluded with a major cliffhanger and revealed the first table of adventurers who will separate from the main group to begin their independent quest, separate from the additional parties.

This warrior group consists of Teor (portrayed by the voice actor), the agile character (the talented performer), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Given a large ensemble, it was evident from the outset that maintaining everyone at one table would be unworkable.

Hence, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before branching into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Schemers, and Seekers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the warrior group is for participants who prefer a classically intense battle-oriented narrative style where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might look mismatched, but the developments of the latest installment demonstrate why these five characters are ideally matched for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

First, the team has a clear idea where to proceed after a brutal first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose death kicked off the narrative’s action—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his own means, entering the hidden lair, attacking the rogue, and taking all the powerful objects to dispose of.

The traitor then cleared his liabilities and fled to a secure base in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each character has a individual motive to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and trusted friend, wants retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the northern area and warns that it is a hostile place.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having resisted his family’s wishes to kill the target and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • However, their reputation as prominent individuals in the influential clan could enable the party enter areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, The fighter swore a life debt to Wicander for his salvation and will now go with him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

In addition, all of them are sought by the authorities that govern Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and The cleric turned against the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This leaves them no alternative but to journey toward the remote area in quest for Casimir.

Future Episodes

Based on episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the combat party will be absent next week, leaving the rest of the participants to form the Explorers and Schemers groups.

Audiences can expect learning which players will be where in the season’s last Overture episode, available to watch on next week.
