EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
