A shadow market for unapproved weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.
Investigational Treatment Gaining Traction Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning properties. Followers are urged to contact these profiles privately for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.
Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, administration instructions and assertions of rapid British shipping. Vendors market the drug there before directing buyers to other platforms for transactions.
Learning About Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help individuals lose up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Voice Worries
However, physicians and chemists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unapproved drug in the UK is worrisome and could result in users injecting substances of unknown origin.
Several professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Enforcement
Selling retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be marketed or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.
Some influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but advertising and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.
Service Reaction and Material Removal
According to TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic content and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The organization said it was dedicated to keeping the service safe and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Online Marketplace Activities
Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand members marketing retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up groups with thousands of users, populated with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step guides for preparing or injecting at home.
After moments of entering one community, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and promised delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.
Item Information and Costs
Inside these groups, messages show dark colored parcels with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between powder vials, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors usually priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a injector should be used, vendors give contradictory responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Safety Actions
A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it regularly monitored dangerous content on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Cautions
“People are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the research behind this drug is sound, these online products may not include what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of an online medical service connected the surge in demand to current cost increases for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she said.
Her team has previously seen patients harmed by personal administration from unverified sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Statement
A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet approved … may subject users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
